About us

Women++

The Society, established in 2023, aims to address the under-representation of women in computing and technology. National data shows that only 18% of computer science students were women in 2015, and City University's Department of Computer Science has similarly low numbers. Despite City's success in widening participation for underrepresented minorities, the proportion of female students from these groups is unclear. The lack of female representation extends to academic careers as well. Through the Women++ initiative, the department seeks to make women's participation a core part of its strategy, focusing on evidence-based approaches to tackle barriers, involve stakeholders, and create equitable opportunities for women in computing, while challenging cultural and environmental factors that hinder female participation.

Why join us

By joining us, you become part of a dynamic community dedicated to advancing gender equality in computing. You will have the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause, collaborate with like-minded individuals, and actively shape the future of our department and industry. Together, we can challenge the status quo, dismantle barriers, and create a more diverse and inclusive computing landscape where everyone can thrive and succeed.

02

Our Mission

Our mission is to create an ecosystem where female students and staff can thrive and build career pathways of exceptional quality in computing. Through this, we will build a better environment for all students and staff (female, male and non-binary). We will achieve this by building our capacity around three key strategic themes. In this document, we refer to our ‘members’ of the Women++ community as those students and staff who identify as female and non-binary.

03

Our vission

Our vision is to create a future where women are equally represented and empowered in computing and technology. We strive for a world where gender does not limit opportunities, and women are at the forefront of innovation, leadership, and decision-making in these fields.
